\"Planet of Men!\" Author: jan311648
(Added on Feb 10, 2006) (This month 23240 readers) (Total 44922 readers)
The genesis of this story was a particularly offensive remark by one of those strident Femininists the United States produces with such ease - or used to. \"Men!\" she had snarled. \"Men are ANIMALS!\" What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, or so they say, and, in response. my story is set on an imaginary planet on which men - the male sex - are human beings while their women are - something else!

This feels like the first few chapters of a long SF novel. It is well written, gives a solid background for the events of the story, and looks into the character of the men.
Unfortunately, this is not the correct venue for it. But finish it, and you'll be able to get it published, nearly as-is, as an e-book. (7/10)

Mnay thanks for the compliments! I'm intrigued by your suggestion tha story's publication as an e-book when it's finished - if ever! I wonder if you'd care to expand on your remark about my setting being not the correct venue?

I completed this tale through the end of the 2nd chapter largely because I enjoy this authors odd writing. Unfortunately, the best thing I can say about this tale is that it is technically sound. Otherwise, it is far too slow in development and the major development towards the end of the 2nd chapter was rather predictable. Chances are that I will see this tale through - at least one more chapter - as I am particualr to this author. (6/10)

Yes, I secretly suspect that my style is a little ponderous and over-formal; other authors on this site, Mr. C L lakewood for one, manage to convey in a sentence what it takes me a paragraph to do. I expect it does seem rather slow, but I really want to point up the unspoken assumptions behind this purely masculine society as I imagine them. But thanks for your promise to read one more chapter; who knows, the tale may get more exciting!

I wouldn't suggest that your style is too ponderous. However, the way your story began is more suited to a novel than a short story. Perhaps it is my expectation of a short story that is the problem and not your actual story.

it just isn't there (5/10)

I have enjoyed many of the stories by this author, and this one has much promise, although it was rather top heavy - the introduction, essential though it was to the story line, overpowered the extent of the first chapter, which was so brief as to yield the merest taste of what is in store for us. (5/10)

Yes, I fear you're correct. I had a vague notion of this myself at the time, but the first chapter virtually ended itself at this point, and I hesitated to include another. But I'm glad you found the introduction useful -- I'd wondered about writing it at all!
